Shandong University of Political Science and Law, located at Jinan -- the capital of Shandong province and a city of scenery, is a full-time undergraduate university, administrated by Shandong Education Bureau under the leadership of Shandong People’s Government.
The university, developed from Shandong Politico-legal Cadre School (1955), has a history of morn than 50 years. After the experience of her vicissitudes and arduous work, every aspect of the university has grown considerably during the past half a century with the unremitting efforts of several generations. She has now developed into a multi-disciplinary provincial university, and has trained a large number of excellent judges, prosecutors, lawyers, and other senior specialists.
Covering an area of 853 mu (about 60 ha.), the university has a building area of 200,000 square meters, a total value of 400 million yuan in fixed assets and 33 million yuan in teaching equipment. With 850,000 print books and 380,000 electronic books, the library of the university is an advanced automatic one in Shandong province. There are 420 full-time teachers, including 150professors and associate professor, 263 masters and doctors; 8,000 full-time undergraduate and college students.
After more than 50 years of accumulation, the university has now formed the present coordinate structure of multidisciplinary development, with legal education as its feature and applied, compound talents training as its basic location. The university implements subject construction project, focusing on the development of legal subjects with traditional advantages as criminal law, economic law, theoretical law, civil and commercial law etc. and actively promoting prison administration, economics, management science, English and other subjects. Relying on the basis of subject foundation, the specialty construction has been strengthened. At present, its specialty covers three major categories of social sciences, humanities and management, giving priority to subjects of law. There are 23 specialties for undergraduate and college students, in which two has the honor of provincial feature subjects. The branch units of the university include 12 teaching departments, namely, Law College, Criminal Justice College, Civil and Commercial Law College, Economic and Trade Law College, Police College, Foreign Languages Department, Electronics Engineering and Computer Science Department, Business school, Humanities and Social Science Department, Marxism Department, Physical Education Department; 20 scientific research institutions, namely, Economic Law Institute, Local Legislation Institute etc.; more than 30 laboratories, namely, Computer Lab, Electrical Circuit Lab, Language Lab, Procedural Practices Training Lab, Evidence Verification Lab, Economics Lab, Moot Court, Moot Arbitration Court, Moot Law Firm etc.; and more than 100 out-of-school internship training bases in People’s Court, People’s Procuratorate, Law Firm, Enforcement Agency of Criminal Law etc. in Shandong province.
In the past three years, the university undertook numbers of scientific research items, 45 from Shandong province and ministries of China; 23 from Shandong Education Bureau; 97 from the university. There are 1273 academic articles published in journals of various sorts: 72 articles in CSSCI (Chinese Social Science Citation Index); 285 in Chinese Core Journals and enrolled by EI and ISTP; 13 provincial and ministerial excellent awards in scientific research. As the first legal journal published in Shandong, the university’s Journal of Political Science and Law has been rewarded as excellent journal of Shandong province.
Adhering to the philosophy of “subject as leading role, teachers as principal part and students as centre”, the university is now on her development way of “establishment from quality, flourish from feature and prosperity from talents” to improve education and teaching quality comprehensively. The quality of teaching is steadily improved by means of improving the professional and overall quality of students, actively promoting teaching reform and innovation.
